Freshtivus Artist Spotlight: Murs: LA Legend Hits TRILL

4 DAYS LEFT till Freshtivus and we’re bringing you another fire spotlight! Today we’re shining the light on one of LA’s finest: MURS. This ain’t just any rapper coming through TRILL. We’re talking about a true West Coast legend who’s been holding it down for over two decades.
Real talk, when you think about the best rappers to come out of Los Angeles, Murs absolutely has to be in that conversation. This dude has been grinding since the late 90s and never lost that authentic energy that makes LA hip-hop so special.

The LA Legend Himself
Born Nicholas Neil Carter on March 16, 1978, in the heart of Los Angeles, Murs represents everything we love about that Mid-City LA sound. Growing up in neighborhoods where hip-hop culture was everything, he absorbed influences from gangsta rap pioneers like Eazy-E and N.W.A while also connecting with the consciousness and community values from places like Leimert Park: the creative center of Black culture in LA.
His stage name MURS? It’s an acronym that he’s given multiple meanings to over the years, including “Making the Universe Recognize and Submit” and “Making Underground Raw Shit.” That’s the kind of wordplay and creativity that’s made him stand out in a crowded field for all these years.
This isn’t some newcomer trying to make a name: Murs has been a cornerstone of West Coast underground hip-hop since he linked up with Living Legends back in 1996. If you know, you know. Living Legends was that collective that included cats like Luckyiam, Sunspot Jonz, The Grouch, Scarub, and Eligh. These were the artists keeping real hip-hop alive when the mainstream was going in completely different directions.
More Than Just Solo Success
What makes Murs so respected in the game is his versatility. Dude doesn’t just stick to one lane. He formed 3 Melancholy Gypsys with his classmates from Alexander Hamilton High School, stayed tight with Living Legends, and kept branching out into different collaborative projects. He’s been part of Felt (working with Slug), Melrose (with Terrace Martin), and the Invincibles (with Whole Wheat Bread).
That’s the kind of artist mentality we respect at TRILL: someone who’s always pushing boundaries and working with different voices in the culture.

His solo career kicked off with F’Real back in 1997 on Veritech, but he really started turning heads when he collaborated with producer 9th Wonder. Their 2006 joint album Murray’s Revenge was so fire that it caught the attention of Warner Bros., leading to his major label debut Murs for President.
But Murs never sold out. Even after working with major labels, he kept that independent spirit alive. In 2014, he signed with Strange Music and dropped some serious heat including Have a Nice Life (2015), Captain California (2017), and A Strange Journey into the Unimaginable (2018).
“Sitcom Rap” and Real Life Stories
Here’s what sets Murs apart from a lot of other artists: he calls his style “Sitcom Rap.” This dude takes his real life experiences, everyday situations, and turns them into compelling music that connects with people on a genuine level. He’s not trying to play some character or fit into typical MC stereotypes. He’s just being real about life, relationships, struggles, and victories.
That authenticity is exactly what TRILL is about. We don’t mess with fake energy or manufactured personas. When Murs steps on stage, you’re getting the real deal: unfiltered LA hip-hop culture with stories that matter.

And let’s talk about his legendary status for a second. In 2016, this man set a Guinness World Record for rapping continuously for 24 hours non-stop during a live Twitch stream. Twenty. Four. Hours. Straight. That’s not just about technical skill: that’s about dedication, endurance, and pure love for the craft. How many artists would even attempt something like that, let alone pull it off?
Beyond the Music
Murs isn’t just about dropping albums and performing shows. He co-founded the Paid Dues festival with Guerilla Union, helping create platforms for underground artists to showcase their skills. That’s the kind of community building that keeps hip-hop culture thriving.
More recently, he launched a weekly podcast called “Best Rapper In LA” that’s been pulling in nearly 3,000 downloads weekly. The name says it all: this dude has earned the right to lead conversations about LA rap excellence.
Why This Performance Matters
Having Murs come through TRILL for Freshtivus isn’t just another booking. This is about bringing authentic LA hip-hop culture to Phoenix. When you’ve got an artist who’s been consistently representing the culture for over 20 years, still grinding, still creating, still connecting with fans: that’s special.

Murs has performed everywhere from small underground venues to major festival stages, but there’s something different about seeing him in an intimate setting like TRILL. You’re going to get that raw energy, those personal stories, and that connection to LA’s hip-hop legacy all in one performance.
This is the kind of artist who can freestyle for hours, tell stories that make you laugh and think, and remind you why you fell in love with hip-hop in the first place. His catalog runs deep: from those early Living Legends classics to his recent solo work, he’s got material that spans decades of West Coast hip-hop evolution.
